I just got back from a weekend in LA to be on an episode of Craft Lab . Craft lab happens to be hosted by my friend Jennifer Perkins. I'm a seamstress but I dabble in crafts too. Thanks to my friend Lynn, the oh-so-clever producer on Stylelicious and now Craft Lab, I secured a project that fit within the strict parameters of show...no wearable arts, no jelewry, no needle work, etc, etc.
All the craft supplies for my project came from my garden and that means I crafted with bamboo. My backyard is fill edge to edge with bamboo. It's my very own bamboo forrest. I used almost every part of the bamboo in my project. I made paper from the sheath, picture frame pillars from the stalks, and the leaves for decoration.
It was fun to be on the set of Craft Lab. The show has an updated format that I wish we used for Stylelicious. There are montages where everything is sped up to keep the pace of the show fast and interesting..kinda like the field pieces on Stylelicious. It was great to see some of the same wonderful people that were a part of the crew of Stylelicious like Jane who is the wardrobe goddess and Suzy who is a very talented make-up artist. The art dept Andre and Dave saved the day by always having the right supply for the task at hand. And of course it was super great to hang with Alesandra of screen door productions. It truly is amazing how many people it takes to put one of these shows together.
The trip was not all crafting, we filmed on Monday but I arrived on Saturday. After being picked up from the Burbank airport, the first stop was at a very scary clinic so Jennifer could have a bite on her leg looked at. It looked pretty bad in my humble opinion. Honestly, I was convinced spiders were going to bust out of it. After she received a shot of meds, we decided to go to see the original Dawn of the Dead in the Hollywood cemetery. It was the last showing of the season so I was excited to be there. It was very creepy walking through the cemetery at night. The next day we got up and headed out to Melrose with another friend, Lisa, who was also a producer on Stylelicious, actually, she was the head producer. The three of us stuffed our faces with yummy pizza and spent the next few hours pillaging through a flea market. I scored the cutest polka dotted dress and a few asian theme gold flasks. We had to end the night early since roll call was at 7am for the show the next day. Jennifer is such a trooper, not only does she have to be on the set from 7am-7pm, she took me to the airport at the crack of dawn before heading to the set to start the rest of her day.
